So is Thomas Jefferson rolling in his grave. One of the two authors of the First Amendment -- the part about religious freedom was his -- he was a Deist who came up with his own version of the Bible excising all the Jesus stuff.

I have that Jefferson Bible. It's fantastic.

Have you come across a modern version of it (see the introduction) by Stephen Mitchell, The Gospel According to Jesus: New Translation and Guide to His Essential Teachings? He is a prolific translator of classical languages.

When I was growing up, we called it the First the family Amendment.

“As ancient Rome fell, the Catholic church stepped in to run the state, and for centuries, Popes chose kings across Europe where the Church was the higher authority.” In biology as the environment changes a species must adapt to survive. As every sane person knows, this is the root of evolution.

I have always seen Rome not falling but evolving. Is Dickless Durbin Catholic?

So, Dickless Durbin’s metaphoric solution to dealing with the MAGA MAGOTS is to give them the Sudatenland. Remember that the Catholic Church supported Hitler because they were fighting the godless communist state.

Thank you Nina!

Knights of Malta and Opus Dei.

The latter was part of Franco’s Spain and exists now. Combine Leo and SCOTUS and we see his work uncovered by Sheldon Whitehouse. As to women-they’re about punishment of women. Look at resurrection of the Comstock Act and the background of its author. There have always been those who are puritanical-these are modern-day Puritans. I’ve included a further link below; thank you for this necessary piece Nina!

Great work, NB! Thank you for the historical perspective…it begins to look like Henry VII would be comfortable here. Who knew the “again” part of MAGA was not about the 1950s but something my much more archaic. I think public opinion must not wait for the beleaguered Dems - we need to twist and shout these anti-democracy fiends out.

One of the arguments against voting for JFK in 1960 was that a Catholic would always put fealty to the church and the Pope ahead of the Constitution. Kennedy was a personal hero, but the country's trust in him opened the floodgates for Christo-fascists like Leonard Leo and gave them access to the levers of US Political power.

So until the GOP decides to *hand over* power Democrats are powerless? Republicans understand what hearings are for (Benghazi). Democrats do not.
