We still must vote in November. And vote blue. Despite good options, we cannot let him come into more power.

Beautiful column. Though I think MAGA's Messiah will become a martyr now, worshipped by the increasingly shrill mass. I hope it diminishes and goes away, but worry that even a few will embrace violence as revenge, or retribution as their leader preaches. It's still a battle for America's soul.

It is a GREAT DAY for America. Trump the criminal was finally brought to justice, held accountable and convicted of ALL 34 felony charges. NO ONE is above the LAW! He is now a felon.

I'm celebrating wearing this funny anti-Trump 2024 tshirt right now 👇 🤣

Thank you for this one, NB. And the quote from Ruth, who I also read and admire. Stepping back a bit, I wonder when/if we will recognize that the “honor system” we have been operating under needs an update. Never have the ethics and morals of the nation been so violated, and - lo and behold - just like with the SCOTUS behavior - rules are lacking. How on earth have we come to a point where a felon can run for the highest office in the land, to lead the nation?!

Merits of the case aside, the net effect is likely favor Trump, turning him into an underdog or victim worthy of support for more potential voters than are moved to turn against him because of this predictable blue state conviction.

Worse is the whole tawdry spectacle tossed like a hand grenade into an already strained election process - one that is almost guaranteed to leave America's democracy with even less legitimacy and support than it has now.

Whoever "wins" in November will have an even harder time governing than if this case, and the others coming up, were never brought. The nation loses no matter which way these destructive and politically driven cases go.

Trump drags everyone and everything around him into the dirt. The fact that it's unpleasant shouldn't make him above the law.

Bullshit. The nation "loses," if trump is never held accountable in a court of law. THAT is what matters most, regardless of Trump's twisted psychotic cult members and sycophants. That "whole tawdry spectacle," you're ranting about is only tawdry because trump is monstrous and will do and say anything. He's now a convicted felon and it's fitting that a New York jury (vetted by the defense, remember?), has found him guilty. It will only favor trump if people of your ilk allow it.

Step back and look at the larger picture. Protecting our democracy is not just about defeating Trump by any means possible. It requires more than that. Our political system has lost legitimacy with a majority of people, and not just because of Trump. A majority of Democrats would prefer not to have to vote for Biden just as a significant number of Republicans have an equal lack of enthusiasm for Trump. Politics in the USA is pure name-calling, cynical partisan talking points and fear mongering. No actual discussion of real issues. All negative all the time. No positive messages from either side. These cases are a sideshow that is only adding to that. For the Democrats to make these cases a key part of its electoral strategy is irresponsible and dishonest expediency corner-cutting, which is undermining, not upholding democracy and legitimacy. As anti-democratic and unworthy as anything Trump and the Republicans have done. As we used to say in the 1960s, "If you're not part of the solution, you are part of the problem." Those who really want to protect our democracy need to be better. Stop making excuses and blaming others. Be more honest with themselves and the voters. "The ends justify the means." is a very dangerous political rationale for either side to adopt, although, sadly, that seems to be where we are at this point in our history.

Sadly, for the millions of Americans who've surrendered their minds in the Cult of Trump, nothing will break the spell.

So the question is: will the sane folks, especially the sane women, vote Trumpism into the dustbin?

The Tangerine Nightmare will continue as a convicted felon and pardon himself Day 1 should he somehow be permitted back into the Oval Office. Lady Liberty will be forced to take a knee as our nation experiments with autocracy.
