What a swell piece. I remember my mother used to say every generation thought theirs was the most dangerous time. “Years later, fear is our national preoccupation, the white noise of our days.” The white noise of our days, indeed. As for myself, I would say I’ve been depressed since Trump was a candidate. (The first time.) And now there’s the really creepy brand of shameless and dumb Republicans.

I do know one thing, though: I’m not afraid of anything or anybody. In my early 80s, I know that I am playing with house money. If anti-Semitism gets me, or a rando with a gun, I will not bemoan being denied more years. Actually, given the givens, I’m ready to leave this life, as well as this country where some of the federal government is operating like a crack house.

If there's one thing that sells more copy than sex, it's *fear*

Nina, you’re so right about Fox’s fear mongering. I live in a small community outside of Austin. The biggest thing we have going on is vandalism/petty crime. But you would think that we have a major problem with criminal activity. I’m on the local Nextdoor app and it’s eye opening the number of people reporting cars and photos of people that they deem ‘suspicious’. If a car is going slow, they are “casing a house”. Anybody out after 11pm is suspicious. It is so easy to spot the Fox viewers just by these posts. It is truly amazing, but frightening because the need for fear in authoritarianism is the driver and that’s the end point.

NINA BURLEIGH!!!! Have you monitored this post? Clarence Wilhelm Spangle @cwspangle has repeatedly posted antisemitic, bigoted comments meant to intimidate and disgust your readers. I have reported several of them--he keeps reposting the comments. You need to kick him off of this site. I’ve reported him to Substack before; apparently no one is “home” to enforce guidelines.

Note how the man is pointing his gun at his wife. . . And she’s oblivious.
