Journalism done right; thank you for your diligence and service to the cause of democracy, Ms. Burleigh.
I think it’s also worth mentioning that what went down during the 1968 presidential election was at least as bad as what happened in 1980 to Carter—I’m sure you know all about it, but it’s worth revisiting to help grasp the importance of the VERY long history of ratfuckery (a military slang word that gained prominence during the Nixon administration thanks to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein) within the GOP. Nixon’s behind-the-scenes machinations to tank the Vietnam peace talks ongoing in 1968 almost certainly changed the course of history. Here’s a good account of what happened:
The only difference between then and now is that the GOP used to do it surreptitiously then. Trump’s too stupid to be so suave and conniving: He says and does all the same stuff as Nixon and Reagan, only right out in the open. And his adoring sycophants lap it up.
You are zinging it. Your concerns are so accurately focused on what I see as key issues: Oct. Surprise managed by Israeli allies of Trump, and even more surely a Nov. surprise foreshadowed in the court's crowning the former commander in chief. You turned me onto Gareth Gore's volume with your review. I'm now reading it and have read all the other reviews google affords.
You brought nuanced perspective on salient question: how could Opus Dei infiltrate and now control the court while _no one_ has named it until now? While democracy advocates are dismayed, they are also awed and toothless. We all see the court and their cohorts as light weight 'born agains.' Some elites are getting used to calling them fascists. This does not really cover it. Their Opus Dei root explains how the court could have ended abortion nearly two years ago without concern about how this would turn voters against born again Christo-fascism. They already have all the power they need and the election is not relevant.
They can impose their beliefs and their candidate and believe God commands them to do so.
What a story. Nice work, Nina. You're really on top of your game. I guess we missed that writing for "The Daily Other" at the time. :)

Yes, I believe you are talking bout the Anna Chennault affair, in which Nixon forces managed to tank the peace talks in 68 ... Craig goes into that in his book, it is one of the 6 times Republicans have ratfucked their way to the White House - in hat case at the cost of who knows how many Vietnamese and American lives. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/12/30/anna-chennault-obituary-vietnam-back-channel-nixon-1968-223299/
Interesting stuff and analysis ! Tx Nina!
